Wonderful Wollongong

Documentary Series | TBC

When Frank Arkell became the Mayor of Wollongong in 1974, he waged a campaign to rebrand the city as place for families to enjoy the idyllic lifestyle and for businesses to move to – a sort of satellite city to Sydney and so was born the Wonderful Wollongong campaign. What lay beneath was a city with deep secrets of sexual abuse by both the clergy and politicians, a trafficking ring with ties to some of the country’s most well-known paedophiles and a lack of action by the police. When a young Filipino man walked into the offices of the local paper, The Illawarra Mercury, with claims that would shock the city and start an investigation by local journalists that would expose more than anyone had bargained for.
